ARTIST BIO

"As both an Artist and Psychologist, my artwork connects the past to the present using symbols that may lead to healing and growth."

My artwork is inspired by what I love.  I truly love textiles and psychology and connect the two in my art practice.  Using textiles as a metaphor for the human condition, I create contemporary drawings and textiles that often include motifs such as tassels, fragments, threads, knots, weaving, knitting and stitching.  Born in Kyneton, Central Victoria in 1970, I have always been fascinated with the relationship between the conscious and unconscious so it is not surprising that I chose to work as a Psychologist and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in private practice in Prahran, Melbourne over the last twenty years.

While developing myself in the psychology field, at the same time I honed skills in drawing, painting and textiles including knitting, heritage lace knitting, tapestry, embroidery, English Paper Piecing patchwork and quilting.  Today I weave these threads together to create art with a strong psychological sensibility and poetic aesthetic.

In my early 30's I taught under tonal realist painter Barbara McCallum, one of the members of the well-known Twenty Painters group in Melbourne.  After four years I longed to find my own creative voice, so attended art school.  Since then I have built up my own distinctive style and specialise in ink and gouache drawings of textiles and embroidered and quilted textiles.

My fourth solo exhibition 'Tassels and Fragments' was recently held at Falkner Gallery in Castlemaine, Central Victoria from 29 Mar - 19 May, 2018. I have previously held solo exhibitions at Gallerysmith Project Space (North Melbourne), Alternating Current Art Space (Windsor) and Exhibit Artist Space (Kyneton).   I am currently contributing to various community projects and conducting research into Australia's Slave History and modern day slavery to inform future exhibitions.  I take regular commissions, create custom artworks and you can follow my art making process on Instagram.  My work is also available through regular exhibitions, my studio in the Macedon Ranges by appointment and via various stockists.

My work is held in public and private collections in Australia, USA, Canada and Italy.
